zga – riga

"the sound of zga's improv noise is like a metaphor of the late soviet or post-soviet everyday life: rusty, broken-down, unpleasantly dominated by cold metal, functioning to seemingly inpenetrable, absurd logic. zga is the first still active russian noise group, started in 1984. nick sudnick, its sole remaining member from the original line-up, is another of those dozens of st. petersburg musicians who at some point played also in pop mechanics. i meet him in his workshop in the center of st. petersburg. the workshop is, naturally enough, filled with beautiful primitive soviet electronics and junk iron objects." (the wire)

zga moved from riga to st. petersburg, russia in 1991, along with its leader and founder nick soudnick (he also plays in vetrophonia, which will be presented soon on your all-time favourite webspace podroom). "riga" was originally released as a vinyl lp on recommended records, and the master tapes have been long lost. nick remastered this cd from the vinyl, but dropped a couple of tracks he didn't like and added several bonus tracks instead.

the original tracks were recorded between 1987 and 1988 in a public apartment, played mostly on home-made instruments (metal plates, springs, wood) amplified and recorded direct to a stereo tape deck. nick soudnick is the inventor of new sound instruments, he calls zgamoniums. the group is still active and focuses more on collaboration projects these days.

"riga" is an industrial landscape, irrational and dada, serious and yet playful.
